Stonehenge - Johannes Blaeu, 1660. (Historical Wall Art)

This Stonehenge print has that calm, old-atlas look, with clean lines and a warm parchment tone. It reads clearly from across a room, so it works well as wall art in a study, office, or hallway. If you like home decor that feels old-world but still simple, this one fits easily.

About this art print

This illustration comes from Johannes Blaeu’s atlas of the British Isles, published in Amsterdam in 1660. Blaeu’s workshop is known for crisp engraving, and you can feel that here in the stone texture and the open landscape. An engraving is a print made from fine lines cut into a metal plate, which is why the shading looks so sharp and controlled.

The scene shows Stonehenge from a low viewpoint, with small figures nearby to give the monument scale. That choice makes the stones feel bigger and a little mysterious, which is exactly how many people in the 17th century talked about Stonehenge. Early modern printers loved taking something mysterious and making it readable on a single page. You can see that same mindset in The Selenic Shadowdial, Athanasius Kirchner (1646), where the Moon’s month is laid out as a clean spiral chart of rising and setting, like someone trying to put time itself in order.

Craft & finish

This Stonehenge vintage art print is made on hand-processed paper, highlighted with subtle gold and sealed with beeswax for an authentic parchment feel as wall art. Please note that colors can look slightly different from screen to screen.

  • In case your print creases during the travel, as it usually does travel for some time, you can safely warm it up with a hair-dryer, and the wax will melt back right into it. You can also use a lighter, which is a much faster method, but be careful to keep the flame either above the paper or parallel to it (which means holding the paper vertically) so it doesn't smudge or even catch fire. The chance of the print actually creasing is very small, as they are rolled in bubble-wrap and shipped in a cardboard box. Also, be sure to keep the print out of the direct sunlight, as it can melt or fade.
