About Artifex:
Handcrafted Historical Replicas
from Dubrovnik
Our Story
Artifex Historical Replicas is a small family workshop in Dubrovnik, Croatia. We have been making these prints since 2005. Our goal is to create hand-finished art that looks calm and authentic on your wall. We want you to enjoy the history behind the image and how it looks in your home.
How We Make Our Prints
Our process is slow and careful because we do everything by hand in our workshop. We start with plain paper and treat it to give it a warm, aged tone.
Next, we softly burn the edges of the paper to make it look like it came from an old library. Once the edges are ready, we add small gold paint highlights by hand. These highlights catch the light beautifully. To finish the piece, we rub natural beeswax into the paper. This gives the print a warm feel and protects it. You can read more about the details of this process and how we create our parchment-style replicas on our blog.
Because we work by hand, no two prints are exactly the same. The small changes in the tone and the burned edges make each piece feel special.
What We Create
We use real historical sources to make our replicas. Our workshop offers a few different collections:
-
Antique Map Prints: Old-world maps and history.
-
Vintage City Views: Artistic views of old cities.
-
Nature Art: Botanical prints, insects, and sea life.
-
Historical Drawings: Medieval art, scientific sketches, and bestiary pages.
-
Sizes and Shipping
Most of our prints come in two standard sizes:
-
Medium: 25 x 35 cm, which is usually around €30.
-
Large: 43 x 61 cm, which is usually around €80.
We also offer custom sizes if you need something specific for a frame you already have. We ship our work all over the world and pack everything carefully so it arrives safely. If you have any questions, please feel free to message us at artifex.replicas@gmail.com.
