'In Vino Veritas' Quote Poster (Medieval Wall Art)

This quote poster shows the words “In vino veritas” in old style lettering above a small medieval drinking scene on a warm parchment style background. Figures sit around a table with wine while a servant or cellarman works with barrels below, so you get both the words and the picture of what they mean. The print feels light and a bit playful rather than heavy, so it works well in a kitchen, dining room, wine corner or home bar where you want something that nods to history but still feels easy to live with.

About this art print

“In vino veritas” is Latin for “in wine, there is truth.” It is an old saying that suggests people tend to speak more freely and honestly after drinking, letting thoughts out that they might normally keep to themselves. Variations on the phrase appear in both Greek and Latin sources and were repeated by writers such as Pliny the Elder, so by the early modern period it had become a familiar proverb about wine and truth.

The scene in the image is based on a 14th century miniature from the Treatise on the Vices by Cocharelli of Genoa, a moral text that shows different vices through everyday scenes: drinkers in a tavern, a cellar full of barrels, workers handling money and so on.  Here, the figures at table and the man among the barrels make the motto feel concrete. You are not just reading about truth in wine, you are looking at people sharing drinks and talk in a crowded room.

Short Latin sayings like this were often used as quick reminders or talking points. Some, like our “Memento mori” poster, point straight to time and mortality and ask you to remember that life is limited. “In vino veritas” looks at a smaller, everyday moment instead: the way a glass of wine can lower the guard a little and let real feelings and thoughts come out.

Craft & finish

This In Vino Veritas quote poster is printed on hand processed paper, highlighted with subtle gold and sealed with beeswax so it feels close to real parchment when you hold it. The surface catches the light softly on the texture of the paper, but colours can look a little different from screen to screen.

  • In case your print creases during the travel, as it usually does travel for some time, you can safely warm it up with a hair-dryer, and the wax will melt back right into it. You can also use a lighter, which is a much faster method, but be careful to keep the flame either above the paper or parallel to it (which means holding the paper vertically) so it doesn't smudge or even catch fire. The chance of the print actually creasing is very small, as they are rolled in bubble-wrap and shipped in a cardboard box. Also, be sure to keep the print out of the direct sunlight, as it can melt or fade.
