Papaver Rhoeas (Poppy Flower) - Köhler, 19th century. (Poppy Wall Art)
This one is bold, but still clean on the wall. The red bloom pulls your eye first, then you notice the crisp stem, leaves, and seed capsule laid out like a page from an old reference book. The open background keeps it calm, so it works as botanical wall art in a kitchen, dining space, hallway, or a bright office. If you like building small sets, it sits naturally with other botanical art prints and simple home decor.
About this print
This print is based on Papaver rhoeas (corn poppy) from Köhler’s Medizinal-Pflanzen, a German herbal published in volumes in 1887., 1890., and 1898., with color images made using chromolithography. The goal was clarity first: a readable plant page that shows key parts in a straightforward way.
You can see that approach in the layout here. The flower head is shown clearly, and the seed capsule and leaves get the same attention, so the plant reads fast even from a distance. If you compare it with Ipomoea purga, you will notice the same clean, scientific “book page” feel, just with a different plant structure.
Craft & finish
Every replica we make is individually hand-processed in our family workshop. We finish the paper with a traditional beeswax seal to give it a warm, heavy texture. Our team also adds subtle gold paint details by hand to help the artwork truly shine. To complete the look, we hand-burn the edges to give each piece the feel of a true historical artifact.
While our smaller sizes are perfect for gallery walls, our 43x61 cm Large replica is a museum-scale centerpiece. Because of the size, the hand-processing and beeswax application take much longer. This extra time and care ensures that every centimeter of the historic illustration is preserved with a rich, authentic glow.
