German Armor from 15th Century (Medieval Art Print)

This print shows a fully armed German knight standing in his armor, drawn in clear black lines on a warm parchment style background. You can see the helmet, breast, arms and leg pieces stacked over each other, so the whole figure feels tall, solid and ready for battle. It has a strong medieval look that works well as wall art in a study, gaming room or reading corner, especially next to books, dark wood and candlelight.

About this art print

This print is based on a historical illustration of German armor from around the time of Emperor Maximilian I, when full plate harness for knights reached one of its high points in design. The armor in the picture shows the classic late medieval look: a fitted breast and back, rounded shapes on the arms and legs, and a closed helmet to protect the head and face.

Armor from this period was made from shaped steel plates that covered almost the whole body. Craftsmen hammered, riveted and polished each part so it could move with the fighter while still keeping him safe. In German workshops, armorers also began to play with line and surface, using ridges and curved forms to make the metal both stronger and more elegant. That mix of protection and style is part of what still draws people to late medieval German armor today.

The drawing is laid out in a clear, simple way, so it is easy to see the shapes and lines of the armor at a glance. When you step closer you can pick out the joints, plates and small engraved details, which gives you a good sense of how the metal pieces were built to move with the body.

Craft & finish
This medieval armor art print is made on hand processed paper, highlighted with subtle gold and sealed with beeswax for an authentic parchment feel. The surface catches the light softly on the raised texture of the paper, but colors can look a little different from screen to screen.

  • In case your print creases during the travel, as it usually does travel for some time, you can safely warm it up with a hair-dryer, and the wax will melt back right into it. You can also use a lighter, which is a much faster method, but be careful to keep the flame either above the paper or parallel to it (which means holding the paper vertically) so it doesn't smudge or even catch fire. The chance of the print actually creasing is very small, as they are rolled in bubble-wrap and shipped in a cardboard box. Also, be sure to keep the print out of the direct sunlight, as it can melt or fade.
