About this map printThis print is based on the famous Fool’s Cap Map of the World, an engraving from the late 1500s made by an unknown artist. The geography follows Abraham Ortelius’s world map from his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which helps date it to after 1587. The jester’s cap and staff turn the map into a visual joke about human pride and foolishness, with Latin sayings like “Nosce te ipsum” (know yourself) and “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity” scattered around the sheet. The idea likely grew out of an earlier woodcut by Jean de Gourmant, where a similar oval world map was framed by a fool’s hood.

Craft & finishEvery replica we make is individually hand-processed in our family workshop. We finish the paper with a traditional beeswax seal to give it a warm, heavy texture. Our team also adds subtle gold paint details by hand to help the artwork truly shine. To complete the look, we hand-burn the edges to give each piece the feel of a true historical artifact.
