Cuttlefish - Jules Dumont d’Urville, 1833.  (Sea Life Wall Art)

This is the kind of print that feels quiet and smart. You get one bold cuttlefish form, clean space around it, and small details that pull you in when you step closer. It works well in a study, hallway, or anywhere you want your home decor to feel calm but not plain.

About this cuttlefish print

This page comes from the scientific atlas made for the French voyage of the corvette Astrolabe (1826. to 1829.), led by Jules Dumont d’Urville and published in Paris in the early 1830s. These atlases were built to record what the expedition collected and observed, with sea life drawn clearly enough to compare and discuss.

What makes this one so satisfying is the layout. The main cuttlefish shapes are big and simple, but the smaller studies around the edges hint at texture, anatomy, and how the animal moves. It feels like a real working page from an older science book, not a modern poster pretending to be vintage.

If you want to stay in the same “sea life as study” mood but see how a later artist turns marine forms into pattern and symmetry, Ernst Haeckel’s Gamochonia picks up that idea in a more decorative, design-forward way.

Craft & finish

Every replica we make is individually hand-processed in our family workshop. We finish the paper with a traditional beeswax seal to give it a warm, heavy texture. Our team also adds subtle gold paint details by hand to help the artwork truly shine. To complete the look, we hand-burn the edges to give each piece the feel of a true historical artifact.

While our smaller sizes are perfect for gallery walls, our 43x61 cm Large replica is a museum-scale centerpiece. Because of the size, the hand-processing and beeswax application take much longer. This extra time and care ensures that every centimeter of the historic illustration is preserved with a rich, authentic glow.
