In the 16th century, mapmakers did not just want to show where cities were located. They wanted to share big ideas about power and unity. One of the most famous examples is the Europa Regina map from 1588. This map does not show a realistic view of the coastlines. Instead, it transforms the entire continent of Europe into the shape of a queen.
In our family workshop, we love the creative spirit of this piece. We use hand-processed paper and a natural beeswax finish to make our replicas feel like real historical finds. Every map we ship has hand-burned edges to ensure it looks authentic when you hang it in your home.
Who Was Europa Regina?
The name "Europa Regina" is Latin for "Queen Europe". While Sebastian Münster included this version in his famous book Cosmographia in 1588, the idea was actually based on an earlier design from the 1530s.
This style of mapping is called symbolic cartography. It was meant to show Europe as a single, united entity under the Habsburg rulers rather than just a collection of separate countries. While other masters like John Speed were mapping the Roman Empire, Münster wanted his readers to see the majesty and "regality" of the continent as a whole.
Decoding the Queen's Anatomy
When you look at our Europa Regina replica, you will see how different regions form parts of the queen's body.
The Crowned Head
Spain (Hispania) forms the head of the queen. On our replicas, we add subtle gold highlights to her crown to make it catch the light. This was a way of showing that Spain was the "head" of European power at the time.
The Heart of Europe
The chest and upper body are made up of France and the German lands. Right near the stomach or heart is a circular area representing Bohemia. This was often seen as the center or "heart" of the continent.
The Arms and Regalia
Italy forms the queen's right arm, and it holds a circular orb representing Sicily. Denmark forms the left arm, which holds a ceremonial sceptre. These items symbolize the worldly power and rule of the European monarchs.
The Flowing Gown
The queen's long dress stretches across Central and Eastern Europe. This gown includes regions like Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, and the Balkans.

Why Our Handcrafted Replicas are Special
We believe a map this unique should not look like a modern computer print. In our workshop, we follow a traditional artisan process to make every piece feel authentic.
Always Hand Burned Edges: We always burn the edges of our prints by hand. This ensures that no two maps are exactly alike.
Beeswax Finish: We finish each piece with natural beeswax. This gives the paper a soft feel and a warm glow.
Gold Paint Accents: We hand paint small gold details on the crown and titles to add a touch of luxury.
Real Historical Sources: Every print is made from real historical sources to ensure the 1588. details are sharp and clear.
Bringing a Queen to Your Wall
Because we use thick, hand-processed paper and natural beeswax, these prints are built to last for many years. We recommend placing your map in a frame to keep it safe from dust and sunlight.
Many of our customers choose a "float mount" for their frames. This style lets the map sit slightly forward so that the hand-burned edges are easy to see. Frequently Asked Questions About the (1588.) Europa Regina Map
Is the Europa Regina map geographically accurate?
No. The geography is distorted on purpose to fit the shape of the queen. It was meant to be a symbolic tool for education and politics rather than a guide for travel.
Why is Spain the head of the queen?
Spain was the seat of the Habsburg Empire's power in the 16th century. Placing Spain as the crowned head was a political message showing that the Habsburgs were the leaders of the Christian world.
What is the "orb" the queen is holding?
The orb represents Sicily. In historical art, an orb with a cross on top (a globus cruciger) was a symbol used by emperors to show their authority over the world.
